Our Projects

What we do, what we've done.

Environmental Voice

  • Weekly Environmental News Updates: Environmental issues are modern and relevant. Working together, Green Grin members collect, read, and analyze news stories related to the global environment and write Journal posts summarizing & updating the past week or month in news. Check out the updates here(i.e. climate change, renewable energy, environmental economics, Trump Administration environmental policies, Paris Climate Accord, Dakota Access and Keystone XL Pipelines, etc.)

  • Monthly Environmental Discussions: Discussion of current affairs, especially in a society that accepts false information, is essential in our society. Throughout the month, Green Grin members plan, read, and observe the news, putting a focus on environmental stories. During our monthly meetings, members set aside time for discussion and reflection and review the past month in environmental news.

  • Special Discussions: Throughout the year, Green Grin members hold special discussions about environmental science and sociology, often led by a community leader. Some of our past discussions include an overview of environmental justice during our Green Grin camp in July 2017 and a lecture on Mexican agriculture and sociology in June 2018.

Community Outreach

  • Birdhouse Initiative: As individuals who have grown up in the age of technology and a concrete jungle like Los Angeles, Green Grin members value the virtues and beauty offered by nature. Highlighting the value of nature, Green Grin members lead an environmental stewardship project to spread "Green Joy" throughout the greater Los Angeles community. As we build birdhouses during meetings in building teams, members reach out to community centers (Los Angeles Community Garden Council gardens, libraries, schools, etc.) and host events to install and donate to the community. In April 2018, Green Grin donated 40+ birdhouses to the Fountain Community Gardens and the Jardin de Rio Community Garden, both member gardens of the LACGC. We are excited to continue our partnerships and extend our collaborations!

  • Environmental Stewardship in Mexico: In our society, environmental issues are closely intertwined with political and economic problems. While the world's richest countries pollute our environment the most, it is the international community's poorest people and countries that are hit the most. Learning more about the global effects of environmental issues, Green Grin members go on an annual service trip to the Baja California area to participate in a project servicing a local farming community. A majority of these farmers are extremely poor and of native race in Mexico, and are affected severely by the environmental ailments in the world. Green Grin members are exposed to an eye-opening experience, learning about the global impact of environmental problems. (Blog posts about Mexico here, pictures of our Mexico trip here.)
